Home Offices During COVID & After: Feng Shui & Vastu

I was invited by Redfin to contribute to a Feng Shui article on home offices. Here's what I wrote, followed by the snippet they used. Vastu is the Yoga of Design from ancient India and is part of the origin of Feng Shui.

Six tips from Vastu expert Sherri Silverman, PhD to create a healthy, unobstructed flow of ch'i, or "universal life energy,” in your home workplace:

1. Use the current situation of COVID as incentive to decide what’s really important in your life and home. We’re all getting rearranged inside and out. Seize this opportunity to organize and declutter.

2. If your home has no space for anything and chaos everywhere, spend twenty minutes a day throwing out or selling or giving away what you don’t want or need.
The result will be a sense of calm within you and in your home workspace. Your thinking will be more clear. You'll feel more at ease. Overwhelm and inability to focus will clear, leaving you freer and able to get your work done.
3. Include some elements of beauty, comfort, and nature in your home workspace. These soothe and uplift— and make the space more functional, stable, and professional.
4. Both Feng Shui and Vastu warn against placing your desk chair directly below a ceiling beam, which has an oppressive vibrational influence. There are enough causes of stress today without arranging your workspace directly under one. Have a smooth ceiling overhead.

5. Face north, northeast, or east at your work area to increase mental clarity, energy, and creativity.
6. Have some expansiveness in front of you. Don’t have a wall directly across a narrow desk—or you’ll feel restricted and be less creative.
Here's what Redfin included in their article:

Avoid working directly under a ceiling beam
