Attend Santa Fe Contemporary Art Gallery and Conscious Events

Visit Artist Sherri Silverman's Santa Fe Studio and Transcendence Design

Visit Sherri Silverman's art studio-gallery at Transcendence Design on beautiful Upper Canyon Road in Santa Fe.

Studio-Gallery Hours: seven days a week by appointment & by chance. Santa Fe, 505.984.0108. 1521 Upper Canyon Road, Studio F, Santa Fe, NM 87501

DIRECTIONS: We're a hidden treasure worth finding on Upper Canyon Road, past Canyon Road and Cristo Rey Church.
From Paseo de Peralta, turn east at the light onto E. Alameda. Go through the stop signs at Delgado, Palace, and Gonzales. E. Alameda curves to the right. Go past Canyon Road on your right. At the four-way stop, by Cristo Rey Church and signs for Upper Canyon Road and the Audubon Center, head up Upper Canyon Road. (If you see Atalaya and Rio Grande Schools, you've gone too far on E. Alameda and are on Camino Cabra). We're on the left side of Upper Canyon Road, just under a mile. When you see an adobe house on the left with a tall flat metal sculpture against it (a man in an oval or something), put on your left turn signal. Go down the driveway after this house. The driveway has mailboxes for 1519/1521 and art studio signs. Go past the old one story adobe buildings. We're on the left down the sidewalk, in left side of the first two-story building, behind the pitched metal roof buildings. Ample free parking.

Transcendence Design Contemporary Art, first two-story building down the driveway at 1521 Upper Canyon Road,Santa Fe, NM 87501

Michael Peter Cain's consciousness-based artistic endeavors result in technically and intellectually brilliant art that also delights. Michael co-founded Pulsa, the experimental art collective based out of Yale University in the late 1960s. He continues to innovate and has received numerous grants, including NEA and Fulbright Fellowships. These works contrast the lyrical arabesque of ornament with the abstract logic of contemporary forms. Michael collaborates with Indian and Nepalese metal-working artisans to juxtapose American abstract minimal sculpture with images appropriated from Indo-Islamic iconography and ornament.

Charlotte Cain's decades of meditation and art-making as a sacred process of the manifestation of silence infuse her artwork. In addition to an NEA Artist grant, she has traveled, lived, and created art in India and Nepal as a Fulbright Senior Research Fellow. Artist Agnes Martin collected her friend Charlotte Cain's paintings. These gouache and mineral pigment paintings reference Indian and Islamic miniature painting, fabric art traditions, South Asian folk and tribal iconography, and contemporary minimalist painting. Her poetic, iconic gems bring beauty, silence, and joy.

 2011 EVENTS:

"Lotus: Sherri Silverman, 25 Years in Santa Fe," Solo Art Show, Opening August 12, 2011

Lotus One. Pastels and pencil on paper. Sherri Silverman
"Lotus," Sherri Silverman's solo show of pastel paintings on paper, communicates a raw sensitivity, playfulness, and delicacy through the use of rich evocative color. Abstract and expressive representational imagery emerge from layers of texture. Sherri utilizes the chemistry of consciousness to depict subtle levels of creation. These magical works by an artist with a doctorate in Creativity, Art, & the Sacred speak to the heart and subconscious, bypassing the intellect. Sherri Silverman's pastel paintings are in New Mexico Capitol Art Collection and corporate/private collections and museum shows across North America. "Lotus" includes new works on paper as well as a mini-retrospective of art Sherri created in twenty-five years as a Santa Fe artist: pastel paintings, collages, oil paintings, mixed media art, archival limited edition prints.

Opening and artist reception on Friday, August 12, 5-7 PM.

"Subtle levels of the mechanics of creation and various forms of symbolism spontaneously dance across all these pieces of paper. All my works are explorations of my own inner images and the images I see in the world around me - the world in nature, books, and art. My inspiration comes from quiet interior states, meditation experiences, and contemplative creative time. My artistic goals include continuing to create work that expands and enlivens consciousness, that nourishes and is a wonder to myself and others. I want to make a lasting contribution by delving into the mystery of creating something from nothing and bringing forth art that evokes the sacred. I wish my art to heal and evoke greater happiness and wholeness in the world."

"In the center of the castle of Brahman, our own body, there is a small shrine in the form of a lotus flower, and within can be found a small space. We should find who dwells there, and we should want to know the in-dweller. And if anyone asks, 'Who is it who dwells in a small shrine in the center of the castle of Brahman?' We can answer: 'The little space within the heart is as vast as this universe. The heavens and the earth are there; the sun, the moon, the stars; fire and lightning and winds...for the whole universe is in this Being who dwells within our heart.'" Chandogya Upanishad 8:1

"Green Thought Forest," Charlotte Cain Solo Show, Opening Friday, July 15, 2011

Charlotte Cain
"Green Thought Forest"
Charlotte Cain gouache, graphite, walnut stain, and acrylic paintings on rice paper, laminated to Baltic birch or acrylic panel. Explorations of consciousness in a larger format, 48" x 12", that can be hung both vertically and horizontally.

Charlotte Cain is a recipient of Fulbright and NEA grants with an extensive career in gallery and museum shows. Her works on paper were collected by artist Agnes Martin. Charlotte's paintings reference Indian and Islamic miniature painting, fabric art traditions, South Asian folk and tribal iconography, and contemporary minimalist painting. This is Charlotte's second solo show at Transcendence Design Contemporary.

Opening on the beautiful full moon night of Friday, July 15, 5-7 PM. Show runs through August 10.

"My use of the brush is inspired by exercises given to me by two master miniaturists, the late Bannu Sharma of Jaipur and Vijay Sharma of Chamba. I use these courtly painting techniques to recreate a range of images the spiritual energy of which has moved me during my many trips to India. These images include kolams and yantras, wayside and ritual symbols, geometric forms of tantric and modern origin, and pattern elements from fabric design. I structure my paintings with reference to the spare and symmetrical compositions of American transcendental abstract painters including Mark Rothko and my dear friend, the late Agnes Martin. I find inspiration in the minimal works of these painters to express my experience of an unmodulated silence that seems to underlie everything I see, hear, and feel. I can best articulate my experience of silence by being open to all possibilities that arise while I am painting, by avoiding ideas and working intuitively, one step at a time, so that each painting is ultimately about the process of painting itself. While painting spontaneously in symmetrical abstract formats, realizing images I remake from traditional Indian symbols, I hope to create works of art in which viewers can re-enact the experience of silence that above all else brings me delight in the play of painting."

For thousands of years tantric seers have observed the powerful influence of the planets on the human spirit. Indian astrology, has long undersood that while the energy released by the orbiting planets affects our lives, it is also an energy that can be directed and harnessed to improve our spiritual, mental, and physical well being.

The 9 planet yantras, beautiful geometric images that utilize specific colors and forms, when meditated upon, instill quietness in the mind, allowing it to positively channel the power of planets represented by each yantra. In this workshop, participants will construct and paint a yantra and will learn a mantra, containing bidj (bija) sounds, which will encourage optimim receptivity to the energies of each planet.

A basic overview of Indian numerology will be covered to help students have a better understanding of the qualities of the planets and how to know the influence of the numbers and planets on one’s life.

The sacred art taught by Mavis Gewant cultivates inner silence and attunes one with the energy and essence of the divine aspect that is being evoked. No previous art experience is necessary. Focus is on inner process in an atmosphere of introspection and devotion. Under close guidance participants paint yantras learning the corresponding mantra and chanting silently as the painting process unfolds.

Register online for Mavis Gewant's Planetary Yantra Painting Workshop.
